rest of if bay area. you can see the line around mendocino county and ukiah. 30s for a few. and a lot of 40s. the cloud cover will prevent the north bay from getting any cooler. sebastopol and mill valley at 44. and close for everyone else. mostly sunny to the south bay. and this system will give us a lot of cloud cover and some rain. increasing clouds and warmer to the south. more clouds to the north. and temperatures from upper 50s to mid-60s. all right, sal. i hope it's still quiet. it is still quiet. we are doing well out there. we'll start with the east shore freeway and take a look at 80 westbound. you can see the drive is looking good. and for the entire trip it's only taking just a little bit over 15 minutes coming out from

the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze. that's the best time you'll get. the trend is to get into san francisco early and the commutes have been filling up early. it's early at the bay bridge toll plaza. and i don't think we -- we don't see much going on here at all when it comes to the bridge commute. let's move along and take a look at the other commutes we have here. highway4 looks good. 680 from the baa nearby ya bridge is -- benecia bridge is looking good. let's go back to the desk. we have an update to the breaking news story we told you about at 4:00 this morning. san jose police told janine de la vega that they arrested three people just a short time ago in east san jose near cammerrer avenue. the three suspects have outstanding warrants and are not responsible for a home

invasion in sunnyvale this morning. the have told the three people arrested were not the same ones who broke into the home. the search for the people responsible for the home invasion continues at this hour. and janine de la vega will have a live report coming up in just a few minutes. here's a look at the top stories we're following for you this morning. looks like the republican presidential candidates will be debating without the front- runner. donald trump says he'll stick to his decision to boycott tonight's iowa debate which is hosted by fox news. trump said that fox treated him unfairly and mocked him. the other candidates are hoping they can emerge tonight from the long shadow trump has cast over the race. the new arena will be called the chase center. jpmorgan rights purchased the naming rights for an

undisclosed amount of money. the warriors new arena is set to open for the 2019 basketball season. and verizon has until 5:00 tonight to remove super bowl ads from a san francisco high- rise. the ads are 30 stories tall, covering two sides of the four embarcadero building. the city attorney sent a letter, filing to -- threatening to file a lawsuit. the signs violate a voter approved ordinance. forbes magazine says the super bowl could turn out or the the most profitable sporting event in u.s. history. the south bay is also cashing in. >> reporter: when the nfl teams arrive at mineta san jose international airport. the private planes will touch down at hanger 67.

it's part of an $85 million private facility for jets and corporate airplanes. >> super excited. it's a huge deal and we were able to add a lot of infrastructure for the airport so we can host more people coming for the game. >> reporter: more than 100 reservations booked for private jets a week before the big game. >> a 30 second ad for an ad on the super bowl is $5 million. we're going to have three hours of play in santa clara. >> reporter: according to him, the 4000 hotel rooms in santa clara are full. and he expects the game will pump hundreds of millions of dollars to the south bay. and unlike san francisco -- >> we negotiated so all of the base costs are covered by the host committee. >> we've had more people this week than in a typical two months. >> reporter: foot traffic has jumped from 50 people to 500

police officer. in a facebook post he called the supervisors buffoons. the legislation is quote the most disgusting, idiotic, and pathetic he's seen in his 35 years of p.o.a. involvement. he said quote to honor a street thug who stabbed another african-american is far over the top. i am speechless. the ultimate blame lies with the voters who put the supervisors in office in the first place. an annual march for a missing dublin girl is scheduled for tonight. it's been 27 years since she disappeared while walking home from school. police believe she was kidnapped. her parents will lead a march from wells middle school at 7:00 tonight. marchers will end up at the catholic church for a prayer service. over the next two days,

healthcare workers will visit homeless camps. 3715 homeless people were identified in contra costa county last year. it's needed for federal funding. some were labeled as water wasters, and may have been the victim of miscalculation. it was based on a two month billing cycle. some of those had only estimated bills or were billed over a period of 120 days making the actual use half of what east bay mud reported. >> and we apologize to those customers that did experience the longer billing cycles. >> east bay mud says even if the list was based on a standard billing period, the overwhelming majority of water wasters would be over the thousand gallons a day maximum

limit. transit agencies will share half a billion dollars to modernize. muni will receive $97 million to replace aging buses and trolleys. bart will receive $67 million. and call train -- ac transit $36 million to replace the aging fleet and to buy double decker buses. this comes from federal funds and bridge tolls. the dmv will hear from supporters of self-driving cars as the agency develops rules of the road. companies like google want the ability to certify that they're own cars are safe. an independent group would have to verify the manufactures assurance that the cars are safe. a dozen companies are

the morning commute. as you look at 80 westbound. not a bad commute heading to the bay bridge toll plaza. two forecasts today. one north and one south. the one to the north has a lot of clouds and maybe some rain. the one to the south has some pretty warm temps. we'll take a look at both.

4:43. welcome back. we want to go back to the breaking news we're following in the south bay. police in sunnyvale are looking for the people responsible for a reported home invasion. the search even led police to another city. the attackers are still on the loose, janine? >> reporter: that's what it sounds like. we're at the sunnyvale police department and we are trying to

get some information from them. we have messages in to them. we were at a scene earlier and we believe this started before 2:00 in the morning. and there was some sort of reported home invasion or a robbery that happened there. and then there was a police pursuit that went down the freeway into san jose. san jose police then got involved and they were following a black suburban into that area in east san jose near 680 and jackson. there was three people that got out of the car. they chased them and ended up arresting them. the victim of the incident in sunnyvale. police brought them to san jose and we were told by police that the victim said these are the wrong people, the wrong suspects. they still arrested the people because drugs were found in the car and there were outstanding warrants. but they don't believe it's

linked to the case in sunnyvale. all that is being sorted out. and we're hoping to get more information from police at the department of public safety. and as soon as we have that we'll update this story. >> thank you, janine. we'll check back in a little bit. 4:45 is the time now. a house in oakland is in danger after a mud slide. you might think el niño is to blame. but experts say it was also the drought. the drought may have contributed to the mud slide. there was a heavy top layer of dry ground which slid down the hill after the recent rains. contractors are now trying to lay down tarps to keep future storms from making the bad situation even worse. >> just in time to see the entire hillside and trees just sliding down the hill. and it was the most terrifying thing i'd ever seen.

>> as an example of the danger in the areas, a contractor got stuck in the mud and needed to be rescued by firefighters. investigators are hoping new surveillance video will help them find four people accused of stealing from a nike store. the thieves carried several boxes of shoes worth $950. they were seen leaving in a bronze hyundai. crime stoppers says any tips leading to their arrest could lead to a cash reward. students at oakland's fremont high school walked out of class involves a confrontation between a student and school officials. they demanded a guard and vice principal will disciplined. students have been planning the protest for the about a week.

[ laughter ] the traffic is doing very well. the commute looks pretty good. it's early as i was starting to say. people are getting into the city early and getting on the road early. this is a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. not a bad commute getting into san francisco. let's take a look at the san mateo bridge. right now traffic is moving well. heading out to the high-rise. there are no major problems heading to 101. and the trend has been as we look at the maps of the peninsula, people getting into san francisco early and driving around the city has continued to be challenging because of the closure of the embarcadero and some of the reroutes associated with super bowl city. at 4:48. let's go to steve. a very good morning. we have clouds increasing to the north. mostly cloudy there and rain. and we also have an advisory for the coast coming in.

high surf advisory kicks in this afternoon. the main impact will be thursday night into friday. clouds are beginning to move in and there could be light rain to the north. this is a pattern where the south bay may be looking at mostly sunny and warm and the north bay cloudy with off and on rain. the main impact is not coming in until later. mostly sunny to partly cloudy and we'll see the clouds continue to roll in. >> livermore is down to 41. and i think we'll see a few more 30s. walnut creek low 40s. moraga, 42. a little chill in the morning air. 47 in ukiah. and rain in mendocino county. santa barbara at 44 degrees. there will be sun in the morning. unless you're up north. the plume of moisture will come

in a couple of pieces. tonight and friday. that will bring us rain. and friday night to saturday looks like a cloud day. and the cold air has to move in. an active pattern although there's not a lot of rain in this unless you're up north. rain likely on friday and then again on sunday. and today, north bay clouds, light rain south. it's a tough one. splitting the difference since the forecast is so different north and south. more clouds to the north. and warm in the south bay. upper 50s and low 60s farther north. i went with a mix of sun and clouds, depending on your proximity to the front. cloudy with rain on friday. and much colder on sunday and monday. and the temperatures take a pretty good little plunge. >> it felt pretty cold this morning. >> when the heater kicks on i know it's cold. >> i know i asked this

welcome back. there has been a break in the search for three escaped prison inmates in orange county. the sheriff's office and the fbi say they are looking at a vietnamese gang connected to two of the inmates. police have arrested five gang members in connection with the escape. and more people have been involved. authorities believe the third escapee, an iranian native and a former marine was the mastermind. a reward now stands at $200,000. the busiest helicopter is back in the air after being grounded for almost five months. henry one is based in is a know

and mostly sunny south side. there's a change in the forecast. but it will be a slow process. not much of a breeze. we've had an easterly breeze. that made for a nice day yesterday. and there's plenty going on in the north bay. 47degrees in hayward. and partly cloudy. my body -- a walking barometer -- says rain is in the forecast. and we have an advisory for high surf that starts at 4:00 and goes through 5:00 on friday. waves 25 feet. and the system is looking pretty good but just the leading edge and moving into the north. that puts cloud cover and light rain. mendocino county, lake county, and south of that it will be mostly sunny. a few 30s and a lot of 40s. we'll check
